Free Jubilee Trees for landowners across Devon

Post by Donna Cox »

In a free tree scheme, Devon County Council, in partnership with the Woodland Trust, is offering 70 packs of free trees to landowners across Devon, to commemorate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022.

Each free tree pack will contain 45 trees comprising three types of native broadleaved tree commonly found throughout Devon. Applications by 27th September 2021 for planting trees this year, or you can still apply now to go on next year's scheme.

All trees are UK sourced and grown.

Things to consider when planting a new woodland
It is worth giving careful thought to where the best place is for trees. If you have a choice, avoid planting trees in a pasture that is wildflower-rich. This is because a wildflower-rich grassland is a nationally rare habitat and attracts far higher biodiversity than a new woodland. Not sure if the site you have in mind for trees is species-rich? Most grazed fields look similar and it can be difficult to tell. Ideally, allow the grass to grow up in the spring/summer and see what wildflowers come up once the grazing eases off. Also, if you carry out a soil test and find it is very low in nitrogen, with a low phosphorous index, it may make a good site to create a species-rich meadow if it isn't one already, as wildflowers need low nutrient levels to flourish (and plenty of light). The most fertile sites are usually best put to planting trees.
