Hi Rebecca,

Whereabouts are you and what is your interest in scything?

There is Kevin Austin near Liskeard, who taught me. One of the top UK mowers and tutors: https://skyegrove.co.uk/all-courses/

I am not that far away in North Devon. I am a scythe tutor and also a volunteer with Bude Friends of the Earth and help out with scythe duties at fir example Crackington Haven.

We are both Scythe Association members

Very best regards,
Adrian

Hi Adrian,
Thank you for your very useful reply.
I have a rewilded smallholding just to the west of Launceston.
I am considering how to best manage it and may need to employ someone occasionally to scythe some of the grass and bracken.
Best wishes,
Rebecca.

Hi Rebecca,
Thanks for your reply.
I am sure that either myself or another scythe mower can mow for you, however rather than employ someone, have you considered learning to scythe mow? It need an investment in your skills and the tools.
As long as someone can stand unaided and can balance then I believe anyone can learn to scythe. It is not about brute force, in fact the complete opposite - the right set up and good technique for the herbage to be mown, plus a well maintain edge are the three key ingredients.
Your location is closer to Kevin than me if you decide to learn.
My e mail is adrianthomas59@gmail.com if you wish to discuss further.
Very best regards,
Adrian

Hi Rebecca,
Excellent. If you have any questions on scything or related topics let me know.

A couple of events that may interest you:
Scythe Fair 12th June, Muchelney, Somerset - there is a beginners course on the 11th at the same venue
Lethytep - 52 acres wildflower site is not too far from you and has a couple of days open to the public.
I can recommend both events.
