Winter heliotrope

There has been a lot of talk on the Moor Meadows email exchange about the Winter Winter heliotrope so I thought I would post some of the information here: This was the original posting: This plant (Winter Heliotrope) has been spreading all along the road verge of Orley Common, near to our property. ...

Re: Flower id app.

An App called Seek ( i Naturalist) is very good - you point your phone’s camera at a plant and it can usually identify it really quickly.

Re: Buy local seed wherever possible

Emorsgate seeds https://wildseed.co.uk/ are good and have a mix for almost any situation. They should be able to supply most of your needs; the site also has lots of helpful information for those restoring wild meadows or creating them from scratch. Then later in the summer get some bales of fresh c...

Buy local seed wherever possible

If you can source local seed, you not only know where it comes from (always good to know), but also it’ll be fresh and locally suited; provided the seed collected is going to a site with similar characteristics i.e. damp meadow seed to a damp site, with similar nutrient levels. The reasons given by ...

Rewilding and meadow management

Rewilding, as has been said, is complicated, and really only makes sense on a very large scale. Anything smaller needs to be carefully managed, especially without wild large herbivores and top predators: Knepp, for instance, has to manage grazing pressure very carefully, by culling and/or removal. Using ponies to get the grass down at the start of spring

This is how we use ponies to help manage our meadows. We have about 5 acres of meadows and have used 3 Dartmoor ponies a few years ago (we now use Shetland’s as the person we got the Dartmoor ponies from doesn’t have them anymore). We get them in at the beginning of January and have them taken off b...

Increasing diversity in a meadow

If you are thinking about reseeding or increasing the diversity of plants in your existing meadow you might be interested in using either green hay and/or dried hay bales from very diverse hay meadows. Both these methods are the most cost-effective way of seeding a large area. Green hay versus dried...
