Re: Old trees
What a fabulous tree Annemarie!
You could add it to The Woodland Trust ancient tree inventory. They have a dedicated page on their website where people can log (excuse the pun) old trees. I'm not sure what the criteria is but your ash looks sizeable.

Yes, good idea to do a soil test to check your soil type if you're investing in spending on seed.

Re: making a wildflower lawn
Hi Piers, if you can bare it, I'd sow seeds this September, just to make sure the ground elder is under control. As your soil is clayish, you may want to consider sowing seeds suitable for clay soil. Emorsgate have a native meadow mix for clay and other soil types: https://wildseed.co.uk/product/mix...

Cactus tree guards - handy video demonstrating everything you need to know about installation!
Cactus tree guards - reusable & relatively non obtrusive - have been widely funded through the Farming in Protected Landscapes grant (FiPL) at 100% of cost for planting of individual parkland/shrubland or orchard trees (at least within Dartmoor National Park). They arrive flat packed. Robbie Ph...

Re: Save Abbots Leigh meadow from development
Thank you Alice. I watched the video - how very sad this lovely meadow with its green winged orchids and skylarks is facing great threat. There is a total lack of understanding by the company Roots about wildflower meadows and their national importance. It's an act of vandalism to wilfully destroy i...
