Winkleigh Community Nature Area

In February 2023, Winkleigh Recreation Field trustees decided to expand the biodiversity area. They scraped off the turf from the field to make banks and sowed with a commercial grass and wild flower mix. Grants came from Tarka Country Trust and ND Biosphere. They also planted hedges and a widely-sp...

Re: Capturing flora and fauna stats - surveys and impact

I have been collating my records and sending them every year to DBRC on a spreadsheet. It is pretty time-consuming, even though I do it annually. I do make use of copy and paste, but checking dates, abundance, etc. takes time. In addition I use iRecord for ad hoc records away from home. My smart pho...

Re: Wildflower seed mix appropriate for North Exmoor

Not sure if it's helpful a year on, but this year we have meadow seed for sale harvested from Nettlecombe Park, west of Monksilver: https://www.habitataid.co.uk/products/exmoor-meadow-seed-mix As the comments earlier in this thread, do use a seed mix as a last resort. Thanks, Nick. I needed to buy ...

Re: Wildflower seed mix appropriate for North Exmoor

Looking at the map for the Buglife B lines, it appears that Oare is on or very close to one of the B lines and you might like to consider adding your meadow. https://www.buglife.org.uk/our-work/b-lines/ Thanks Amy, I discovered our wildlife garden (meadow) is right in the middle of the B-line headin...

Re: Convert village green to wildflower meadow

Hi Dave, your grass/flower mix clearly had cornfield annuals, did it also have second year perennials?

Re: Saying hello

Hi Adrian, our scythe is curved with a smooth wooden handle. I should look up more about them, and how to set it up for my height, etc. It would be a useful skill, as we have a damp meadow and some community areas to cut. Thanks, Kim

Re: Saying hello

Hi Adrian, thanks. I do know about Jo. We were part of Life on the Verge. I also attended lots of Conservation Communities webinars and the Dolton Wildlife Day. Winkleigh is outside her project area. We have a scythe at home, but my husband found it a strain on his body, so it's not being used. I am...

Re: Saying hello

Thanks for the reply. We are still pursuing the verges project in Winkleigh, though I am only involved in plant surveys. The main volunteer is buying in non-local UK seed, so no idea whether all those species will take. I am starting another project in the sports field, but favour restoration rather...

Saying hello

It seems a pity that Torridge doesn't have any posts, as I am sure there are things going on here. As people have mentioned the natural environment does not divide easily into political boundaries. We are inland at Winkleigh, so we are an area of wet, rushy meadows, moor, much 'improved' grassland, ...

So gutted, I thought I had booked a ticket and now I find I didn't. Too late to join now. Will it be recorded?
